About Susan
Susan Fisher has Deep Roots in her community. She, her parents and grandparents were all raised in Buncombe County. Her grandfather, Robert Henry Reese was the first motorcycle policeman in the Asheville Police Department and Susan's mother often rode to school at William Randolph in the motorbike sidecar. Susan as well as her parents and children are all products of the Asheville City and Buncombe County Schools. Susan attended Oakley Elementary School in grades 1-3 where Martin Nesbitt, Sr. was principal and Mary Nesbitt taught English. She attended Haw Creek School through the 6th grade, David Millard for Junior High, South French Broad for grade 9, and graduated from Asheville High School in 1973, before attending Mars Hill College. She continues to attend the same church she attended as a child; St. John's Episcopal Church in Haw Creek.
Susan has Strong Values. She is strongly committed to family. She and husband, John Fisher, Jr. have been married for 31 years. Susan was determined to raise her children here in her home town so that they could grow up with grandparents and other extended family close by.
Susan believes in public service--in giving back to the community. For over twenty years Susan has volunteered in organizations across the area, from her church to the schools to Bele Chere. Currently she serves as senior warden of the vestry, lay reader and choir member at St. John's.
Because Susan believes children are our greatest resource, she has worked for years in education, beginning as a teacher's assistant. As school board chair she strove to ensure a quality education for all of Asheville's children.
Susan is committed to improving the quality of life for the citizens of Western North Carolina. Susan believes we have the most beautiful scenery and the smartest folks anywhere. Together we must encourage economic opportunities, especially among homegrown industries while we insure a healthy economy and environment for our future and that of our children.
Susan has Proven Experience, beginning with her work in the Washington, D.C. office of the late Congressman James McClure Clarke from our 11th Congressional District. She became president of the League of Women Voters of Asheville/Buncombe County and later served as Governor Hunt's appointee to the N.C. Council for Women. Susan served for two four-year terms on the Asheville City Board of Education, becoming chairwoman for her second term. It was there that Susan honed her skills as a consensus builder and A Leader Who Listens.
Now, having served in the NC House for two terms, Susan continues to take her Deep Roots, Proven Experience, and Strong Values to Raleigh to serve her constituents.
